Weekend in Durham: Part 2 - Sunday meanderings

If Saturday had been about exploring everything Durham had to offer, Sunday was a laid back day for wandering and taking photos. Thanks to our late check out time, we were able to take Sunday morning at leisure. We opted to fill up at breakfast time, the logic being that we'd already paid for the cost of our breakfast with our room fee so if we ate heartily, we could avoid spending more at lunchtime. We understood the mission, and checked out with full tummies, once again leaving our bags at the hotel so we were free to wander.

First up, I was keen to walk along the river to see if I could get some images of the river with the Cathedral above it. The weather was glorious, we were actually getting hot on our walk. Unfortunately for the chap, my rediscovered love of photography meant he either turned around to find me half a mile behind him, having stopped to capture something, or turned around to be faced with a camera. Jokingly he asked me a few times how many frames I had left before my film ran out (at least I think it was jokingly).

The view when your girlfriend rediscovers her love of photography

But images like this make it worthwhile

Following a bridge back across to the town, we found ourselves behind the cathedral, seeing the rose window from a different perspective, and entering the square from a different angle. We wandered back down the cobbled streets that we'd wandered the day before, and I stopped to pick up a couple of gifts I'd spotted for people the day before.

We pottered around the bookshops again, and once again there was a buzz in the city. Queues of students lined up outside hip coffee shops waiting for a flat white, while the independent stores buzzed with people. I think a lot of other towns and cities could take a leaf out of Durham's book!

Before we knew it, it was time to collect our luggage and head back to the train station. It was hot, and the chap was a perfect gentleman lugging all of our luggage the entire way. I think he was glad to get to the station and enjoy a cold drink. Both of us agreed as we travelled back to York on the train that afternoon, it had been a fantastic weekend and that Durham was an absolute gem. It was our first visit, I don't think it will be our last!

Round The Sun

Last week I celebrated my birthday, for pretty much half a week. I certainly like to mark an occasion! Marking my birthday with my favourite cake, Black Forest Gateau The day before my birthday I was in the office. There weren’t many people in so I mostly ended up eating the tub of chocolates I brought with me, to myself! The weather was still divine, so I took a lunchtime walk, and noticed some new graffiti on the streets of York.  In the doorway boy………… After work I met the chap, who treated me to a very indulgent birthday meal at The Ivy. While we waited for our (delicious) Chicken supremes to arrive I was allowed to open my gifts a day early, and was wowed by a stash of Tank Girl merch, including a collection of 3 books that include every edition of Tank Girl, ever. I adored the Tank Girl graphic novels (or comics as I used to call them) in the 90s, and loved the film with Lori Petty too. The chap frequently has to listen to me complain that I never come across them anywh...

Half Term Frolics

This week was half term in Yorkshire, and in true half term style, the weather has left a lot to be desired. Nonetheless I had three days off work to spend with little Miss, which is always fun no matter the weather. We started the week off fairly chilled, spending much of Monday crafting and doing more of our sequin art. We popped out for a coffee in the afternoon, and came home to watch some films. All in all a chilled day.  Tuesday we visited our friends, and I had a good old catch up with C while little Miss played with her son. They've been friends since they we're born, with only a couple of months between them. We only really get to meet up at the holidays and it's amazing to compare the photos of them on playdates when they were 2 or 3 with them now at approaching 7. Time goes so quickly.  Wednesday, my last day off work, we decided it was time we did something. We took a trip to nearby Malton, which is a lovely little town between Scarborough and York, and home ...

Easter Weekend

When I logged off last Wednesday it was in the knowledge that I wouldn’t be back online (for work purposes at least) for well over a week. As much as I enjoy my job, there’s nothing quite like a week of freedom! I met the chap after work, and we went for a pizza and beer to celebrate.  On Thursday, we were unexpectedly graced by the sunshine, which was welcome since we had appointments in town. An eye test for little Miss and nails for me. Although the sun didn’t bring much warmth, it was perfect for wearing these Joe Browns boots Mum bought for me a few Christmases back. I love them but only cool dry days work for them. Boots - Joe Browns, Dress - River Island. Thankfully, little Misses eye test came back perfect. After a spot of shopping, including getting some gifts for little Misses birthday later this month, and raiding the Claire’s accessories clearance sale for bag charms, it was time to get my nails done. I plumped for a beautiful iridescent pink for my nails, and the...
